About Accelerated Reader (AR)

This web-based program is used to encourage a love of reading andyoung boy leaning against a stack of books increase reading comprehension among all students. Students read a book and take a short computerized test. They earn pointsbasedon how many questions they answer correctly. As these points accumulate, students earn small prizes.

  • Over 100,000 quizzes are available and more are always being added. Use the AR BookFinder to look up the books your child wants to read. See if there is a quiz available and how many points are possible for that book/quiz.
  • Quizzes must be taken at school in the media center or on classroom computers between 8:30 & 5:30, Mon-Fri.
  • Students & parents must read the Student AR Contract, complete the form, and return it to Dr. Buescher. Research has found that most schools use a contract to highlight student ethics and responsible behavior.
  • Students should take tests on their own without the help of classmates, parents or teachers.
  • Quizzes may not be taken more than once. Points are earned based on the number of correct answers. You must answer at least 70% of the questions correctly to earn any points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AR Required?
Many teachers DO require a certain number of AR points per quarter as part of a student's reading grade. However, even if your teacherdoes not require AR, we encourage all students in grades 1-5 toparticipate in this easy, fun program.

What are AR reading levels?
The reading level is a number formatted as Grade.Month. So a 2.2 reading level is rated for second grade, second month. There are many formulas for determining reading levels, so AR level designations may not coincide with FAO reading levels.

Do students have to read at their level?
Students are expected to read books at their level. Choosing lower level books in order to get lots of easy points OR choosing difficult books in hopes of scoring a large number of points quickly is NOT what AR is all about. Students are automatically blocked from quizzes on books half a grade below them (i.e. 3rd graders must read books at 2.5 or above). Teachers may request level exceptions based on a student's skill level.

What are the tests like?

Sample question:
from the quiz on Where the Wild Things Are (RL 3.4, Points 0.5).

Max wore a _____ suit.
A. tiger
B. lion
C. wolf
D. bear

My child saw the movie/ listened to the audio book. Can she take the test?
No. AR is a reading comprehension program. Quizzes are based on complete, original books. If you try to take a quiz after reading an abridged version or seeing a movie, you'll probably have trouble answering the questions.
