Borrowing Programs Volunteering AR Media Home

Friends of the Library (FOL)

Goals:

  • To promote life-long reading through reading enrichment programs
  • To raise funds for new books and other media
  • To assist with Media Center tasks

FOL Meetings

Planning meetings are held once a month at 8:30 AM, and are open to any parent who is interested in supporting the media center. Just let Dr. Buescher know if you'd like to receive emails about upcoming meetings.

Reading Enrichment

FOL members help with planning, scheduling, publicity, and staffing for a variety of ongoing programs, special events and activities throughout the year that are intended to inspire children to read more, improve reading comprehension, and broaden their reading interests. More on Media Center programs ...

  • Accelerated Reader Program - (ongoing)
  • Children's Book Week - (May)
  • NC Children's Book Awards - (Spring Semester):
  • Read Across America - (March 2nd, Dr. Seuss' Birthday)
  • Author Visits - (to be scheduled)
  • Book Swap - (late Spring)

Fund Raising

The FOL is committed to raising funds used exclusively to support buying more books and other media for the school and for supporting reading enrichment programs. Ideas for fund raising are always welcome!

Celebration Books Program:
This program encourages families to donate money for new books and recognizes student donors.

Book Fairs
Scholastic Book Fair (late September)
Quail Ridge In-Store Book Fair (December)

Media Center TLC

Though fabulous, without a doubt, Dr. Buescher is only one librarian and her staff is small. FOL members volunteer and/or recruit others to help with basic ongoing tasks and general care of the Media Center so that Dr. Buescher can focus more of her time on learning activities.

Shelf Angels
Shelf Angels adopt a small area of the library and spend about 20-30 minutes per week keeping it neat and organized.

Circulation Desk Assistance
Volunteers check books in & out, reshelve books, help students pick out Accelerated Reader prizes, and other tasks as needed.

Library Beautification
Various projects each year that visually enhance the atmosphere of the Media Center, such as updating shelf labels and creating book diplays or bulletin boards.

Year-End Inventory
Volunteers search for duplicate or missing book titles, scan books for computer inventory updates and other related tasks.
