2005 3rd through 5th grade Science Fair
Grades 3-5 Science Fair, 2005

Science Fair

Our Science Fair is a collaboration between the PTA, N.C. State, and Olds teachers. It is chaired by parents who find volunteer judges from the community. Students may begin their projects at any time, but most work on their projects in December and January, which allows our winners to move on to the countywide competition. The Science Fair lasts two days; grades K-2 present one day and grades 3-5 present the next day. All students tour both sets of exhibits, and parents are encouraged to do the same.

Reflections

A national PTA program, Reflections gives students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students are encouraged to create and submit works in four areas: literature, musical composition, photography and the visual arts (including drawing, painting, print making and collage). At Olds, our specialists trade judging duties with another school to ensure impartiality. Look for information in October or November.

Character Education

While there is no single script for effective character education, the Wake County Public School System has adopted specific traits to summarize the key principles. By utilizing the same language of character and using specific words, our families can join with our schools and community in cultivating a "culture of character." Learn more at the Wake PTA's Character Corner.

Friends of the Library

This group spearheads a variety of events, including but not limited to:

Yearbook

Take digital photos, create fun pages, promote and take orders.

Grounds

Plan and promote a fall and spring work day for families to spruce up the grounds. A subcommittee is working on playground master plan improvements and fund-raising to continue this major project.

Junior Achievement

Teach five preplanned lessons to a class regarding the interrelationships between individuals, families, communities, and businesses. These lessons in business and economics begin in kindergarten and build upon each other through fifth grade. No teaching experience required; the lessons are designed to be taught by business people and require minimal planning.
